Nandankanan Zoological park (Odia: ନନ୍ଦନକାନନକ ଜୀଵ ଉଦ୍ୟାନ) located at Odisha , district of kharda.
Total zoo area is spread in 437-hector (nearly 1080 acre ).
Nandankanan was established in 1960 but fully opened to the public in 1979.
The zoo is attached with a botanical garden and zoological garden.
This Zoological park is located at the state headquarters of Odisha in Bhubaneswar.
The Nandankanan zoo is part of the Chandaka forest (175.79 km² in 44,426.109 acre) including Kanjia Lake is a total wetland covered with 105 hectares in 269.45 acres.
Nandankanan Zoological park became the first zoo in India to become members of the World association of zoos and aquariums (WAZA) in the year of 2009.
History of Nandankanan -
In 1960,the odisha forest officer decided to show rare animals and plants in an agricultural fair exhibition at new delhi .
two spotted deer (Axis axis),two barking deer (Muntiacus Muntjak),two black buck ( Antelope cervicapra),one mouse deer(Trangulidae),one leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis),one flying squirrel (Pteromyini),one racket tailed drongo ,one hornbill (Bucerotidae),two parrots (Psittaciformes) ,two hill mynah (Gracula religiosa),one peacock ( Pavo cristatus),one mongoose (Herpestidae),one pangolin (Pholidota) and two porcupines (Erethizon dorsatum), wild boars (Sus scrofa) and python (pythonidae) had exhibited at Delhi agriculture fair on those rare animals and birds.
Nandankanan Geological Survey-
Mainly it was proposed to have the zoo Ghatika to Khandagiri and Udaygiri cave. Beaucase ,the Ghatika area had created a water problem in case in the future .A zoo needs more water for cleaning animals,sheds and other purposes .
The chandaka ranger officer suggested that Jujhagaro forest block on kanjia lake near Barang railway station is the best location for the zoo.
The Nandankanan zoo had started at 125 acres .
